Aaron Ramsdale merits ‘reward’ of England No 1 berth at World Cup – Mikel Arteta

Aaron Ramsdale deserves to be England’s No 1 goalkeeper at the World Cup, according to Mikel Arteta.

Jordan Pickford has been Gareth Southgate’s go-to goalkeeper since the 2018 World Cup, but he will miss England’s Nations League games against Italy and Germany with a thigh injury. This will likely give Ramsdale a chance to impress.

While Pickford has helped England to a World Cup semi-final and a European Championship final, Ramsdale’s form means there have been suggestions he could take the Everton goalkeeper’s place.

The 24-year-old Ramsdale has impressed for Arsenal and Arteta thinks he has shown that he is ready to play for England.

The Spaniard said: “It would be a good reward for him for what he has done.

“I hope he is [picked for the World Cup]. I think it would be great for us and Aaron. He showed in the last year what he is capable of doing. We will be watching and waiting for that decision.”

Ramsdale has kept two clean sheets in six matches for Arsenal this season. He also shone after taking over from Bernd Leno as first-choice at the Emirates Stadium last season, keeping 12 clean sheets in 34 Premier League games.
